I have had two meals with Ramen noodles in the past two days. Ramen Noodle Pad Thai and a great cold pasta salad dish from a friend. Mmmmmmm....
I only have 8 work days left at BioWheels before I return to grind of cube life. Technically I guess it's selling out. Doing something that is not all that much fun basically just for the money. The field interests me, but it's certainly not a passion. I really liked the bike biz and maybe I could have lined up a better job w/ benefits, etc but it would certainly mean a move. No thanks!
With our increased income ready to kick in I took the plunge and ordered DirectTV yesterday. We have not had any kind of 'cable' for almost 4 years, and it will be nice to what's out there! I really got the service for two major reasons....DVR and Versus. With Versus I can see more bike racing on TV and the DVR will be great for that as well. For the world's biggest race, the Tour de France, they do the sweet full daytime coverage, and then a cheesy edited prime time version. I'll gladly DVR the daytime broadcast and watch it later.
That's all for now....

Wow!
I have not posted in a looooooong time!! Funny how you get out of the habit and 7 months fly by! It all started when I broke my hand in June while mountain biking. Basically typing was a literal pain and I didn't blog for some time....then 'this and that' happened, and well....you know.......so the last 7 months in a flash!
broke my 4th meta carpal bone in June - my x-ray looked exactly like the one in this post, except now I have a Ti plate and 5 screws in my hand
Greta's fledgling gymnastics career is taking off
My boss & I won the NightTrain 12hr race in August, leading the entire time
Just this past week I gave my notice at BioWheels and will head back to cube-life
I ended up voting for Obama and helping NC go blue! Sorry Ralph, I know you have done more for this country than any single citizen!
Ariane and I were married 10 years on 8/1/08!
Well....that's a lot of news! I'll try and post more often.

Good times, good times
This past Saturday was one of the times that makes me 100% convinced moving to Asheville was a great decision! The past weekend was the Mountain Sports Festival at Carrier Park, which also happens to house the local velodrome. Yes, Asheville does have a velodrome. It's affectionately referred to as the mellowdrome because of it's very slack angles.
The MSF is a gathering of outdoor sports enthusiasts revolving around vendors, music, events, and some cold beverages. Saturday night was the Fat Tire Track Racing, where the local mountain bikers were invited to race mountain bikes on the track for the first time ever. Unless you were there and know all the "combatants" it's very hard to express how much fun the night was.
Matt Johnson & I got 2nd & 3rd in the miss-n-out race, there were team events, and 2-3 lap dashes for cash! All fueled on by some free beer we all scored with our connections. Greta even brought her bike and raced around the track to the cheers of the local cycling community.
If you tried to do it all again it would pail in comparison. It was great and special because it was the first event of it's kind. The best people of Asheville were there, and no attitudes were allowed! I can't imagine this event happening anywhere else but here.
A couple pics;
That's me with the fist out, ready to race!

Burn 24 Pics
Quick post with some pics from last weekend's Burn 24 Hour Challenge;
Mike Brown is all smiles before a lap

Ian looking a bit pained as he starts yet another fast lap

Mike heading out with the baton going into his pocket

Lots of smiles, singletrack, and great weather!

Greta is out for the win, looking focused

Waiting for the starting gun

Always having fun when pedaling

High fives from Dad with the big win!

Ian and Dave happy to be done riding!

A weekend to remember
I'll certainly never forget the 2008 Burn 24 Hour Challenge for many reasons.
The family unit arrived at the event Friday evening to set up camp and grab a good central location for the weekend. Burn takes place at the Dark Mountain trails in Wilkesboro, NC which is just over two hours from Asheville. Just a while after we arrived the Ben & Angela Poss Professional Racing Team Unit arrived with their tow behind camper, and my co-work Ian Russell "a monkey could do your job" Baldwin.
We all settled in to the routine of setting up camp, eating some food, drinking some cold beverages, and chatting away the daylight. How could we have known the defining moment of the weekend would come at 10pm that night. The Poss Child, aka Wiley Poss, created a thud in the camper and some crying followed. The poor wee one fell out of bed, caught her nose on the edge of a heating grate, and was soon off to the ER!! Well after a sleepless night and a return to the ER to see a plastic surgeon, Wiley was awarded with 30, yes THIRTY, stitches in her face! Luckily the stitches and cut are on the 'fold' part on the side of the nose, and I doubt you could find a scar in a few weeks. Needless to say Team Poss was going home.
This left the BioWheels Mob with only three team members. After some discussion I decided to step up and race with a team and give up the solo entry. It was easy actually. 24 hours of suffering alone or 24 hours of competitive racing and a team effort? I chose wisely!
At noon on Saturday the gun went off and we started the insanity! I had us in 10th after the first crowded lap, and we started to crank out some steady & fast laps. All afternoon we hung around 4-6th place and we were starting to think 5th would be really sweet. 1st or 2nd would not happen, 3rd would have been HEROIC, 4th or 5th seemed possible and 6th was acceptable.
Well we battled hard, did some fast laps, did some laps that maybe could have been faster, and we had fun! We kept a racer on the course for 24+ straight hours, had no logistical snafus, and each slept for a few hours. 6th place was ours! Woohoo!
After a few hours I said to a teammate - "ya know, my 24 solo career might have come to and end. This team stuff is so much more fun!"
Luckily one BioWheels racer was able to secure a win. Greta raced really hard, overtook an illegal head start by a cheater on a scoot bike, and secured a hard earned win in the 3-5 yr old race!! It actually was a great race and I was cheering too much to take pictures. Luckily a friend has some shots and I'll get them posted soon. For now here's a shot of her with her winnings....some stickers and a bouncy ball!

Before the race, they asked Greta what number she wanted and she said "I want number 1!"

Greta met a new friend, Ellie, who is from Asheville. Ellie's Mom was on the winning womens team.

Wish me luck...
...as I am about to undertake my 2nd 24 hr solo mountain bike race this weekend. I will be returning to the Burn 24 Hour Challenge where I took 12th last year without any support crew. This year I somehow convinced other BioWheels racers and my family to join me. We have a 4 man team competing as well. I'd love a top 10.
Oh and there is a kid's race for our lil prodigy.

For mom
Day #6 involved no driving on my part. After a valiant effort, several bike trips with the trailer, and many phone calls, the WifeChild Unit was "forced" into the wagon for a trip to Target. Greta got enough money for her b-day to get a 'razor' scooter. There are several toy or dept stores within biking or walking distance, but they either did not stock or were our of stock on this particular item.
Another interesting question for the average person. Do you wait for the local store, get in the car to the big box store, or order online? You could right a book on the subject and many have. In addition to driving less, this country seriously needs to revamp the freight train infrastructure and get away from the wasteful truck based delivery methods.
