The family unit arrived at the event Friday evening to set up camp and grab a good central location for the weekend. Burn takes place at the Dark Mountain trails in Wilkesboro, NC which is just over two hours from Asheville. Just a while after we arrived the Ben & Angela Poss Professional Racing Team Unit arrived with their tow behind camper, and my co-work Ian Russell "a monkey could do your job" Baldwin.
We all settled in to the routine of setting up camp, eating some food, drinking some cold beverages, and chatting away the daylight. How could we have known the defining moment of the weekend would come at 10pm that night. The Poss Child, aka Wiley Poss, created a thud in the camper and some crying followed. The poor wee one fell out of bed, caught her nose on the edge of a heating grate, and was soon off to the ER!! Well after a sleepless night and a return to the ER to see a plastic surgeon, Wiley was awarded with 30, yes THIRTY, stitches in her face! Luckily the stitches and cut are on the 'fold' part on the side of the nose, and I doubt you could find a scar in a few weeks. Needless to say Team Poss was going home.
This left the BioWheels Mob with only three team members. After some discussion I decided to step up and race with a team and give up the solo entry. It was easy actually. 24 hours of suffering alone or 24 hours of competitive racing and a team effort? I chose wisely!
At noon on Saturday the gun went off and we started the insanity! I had us in 10th after the first crowded lap, and we started to crank out some steady & fast laps. All afternoon we hung around 4-6th place and we were starting to think 5th would be really sweet. 1st or 2nd would not happen, 3rd would have been HEROIC, 4th or 5th seemed possible and 6th was acceptable.
Well we battled hard, did some fast laps, did some laps that maybe could have been faster, and we had fun! We kept a racer on the course for 24+ straight hours, had no logistical snafus, and each slept for a few hours. 6th place was ours! Woohoo!
After a few hours I said to a teammate - "ya know, my 24 solo career might have come to and end. This team stuff is so much more fun!"
Luckily one BioWheels racer was able to secure a win. Greta raced really hard, overtook an illegal head start by a cheater on a scoot bike, and secured a hard earned win in the 3-5 yr old race!! It actually was a great race and I was cheering too much to take pictures. Luckily a friend has some shots and I'll get them posted soon. For now here's a shot of her with her winnings....some stickers and a bouncy ball!
Before the race, they asked Greta what number she wanted and she said "I want number 1!"
Greta met a new friend, Ellie, who is from Asheville. Ellie's Mom was on the winning womens team.
Dad finishing an early morning lap, rockin the BioWheels wool jersey.

awesome job man. Now for your place did you get a sticker and bouncy ball? Sheesh..that is what I'd want.
Nice job. We probably passed each other out there at some point. It was my first 24 hour event (as it was for 4 of the 5 on my team) and it was AWESOME! Can't wait to do another.
